Who We Are Susan Carson Lambert, Owner, Geographer and GISP Susan Carson Lambert is a geographer with 41 years of experience in the fields of land surveying, cartography, GIS and remote sensing and Geo-politics. She worked with the U.S. Geological Survey in many capacities, water use specialist, cartographer, scientific illustrator, geographer, and program manager, for both the Water and Geography Divisions. She served on the Framework Working Group in the early 90’s – a national group which defined the ‘framework’ layers of geospatial data necessary for conducting the business of government in the U.S. The “Framework Data” defined the USGS Geography Division’s National Mapping Program for a decade. Ms. Lambert left federal service in 1996 and was appointed by Governor Paul Patton as the Executive Director of the Office of Geographic Information for the Commonwealth. During her tenure as the Ex. Dir., the Kentucky Basemap was created in fiscal and programmatic partnerships between KY and several federal agencies. This work won her the John Wesley Powell award in 2000 – which is the highest award given to civil domestic mappers in the U.S. While still attached to OGI she was funded by NASA and EPA to conduct $5.5 million federal research projects such as the Kentucky Landscape Snapshot, The Kentucky Landscape Census, and the Kentucky Watershed Modeling Information Portal. A change in gubernatorial administrations in 2004 brought about her retirement from public service in 2005. It has been estimated that during her 9 year KY tenure she caused $11 million to be spent on research, GIS, Remote Sensing and mapping projects in KY. Since her retirement she has been active in the field of renewable energy. She started two companies, RE Strategies, LLC, and subsequently EarthWorks, LLC. She has successfully completed 25+ projects. Some of these projects incorporate GIS and remote sensing technologies into site selection and evaluation for renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, and biomass. EarthWorks has also worked on grant origination, policy analysis and development, research, and new technology research and reporting. In August of 2009 she was seated on the Mapping Science Committee of the National Academy of Science for a 3 year term.
